Coot feeding its young by linneaphoto Coot feeding its young by linneaphoto

Species: Eurasian Coot (Fulica atra)
Family: Rallidae
Conservation status: Least Concern

Date: 12/6 -14
Location: Swanpool Nature Reserve, Falmouth [UK]
Camera: Nikon D7000
Lens: Nikon 300mm f/2.8

About the photograph
I spent a casual day at Swanpool, feeding and watching the birds as well as talking to my friends from uni. These coot chicks were quite brave as they stayed relatively close to where we were. I laid down to get the lowest possible vantage point and this adult coot brought some seeds that other people were feeding the birds. The light and my position was perfect and I feel privileged to have captured such a tender moment between these two birds.

Yeah they are truly awesome birds! I love their call, it sounds funny, and those feet are really cool, making them able to run on water! :la:

I can't help but wonder why baby coots look nothing like their parents.

Same really, at first for a moment I thought they were moorhens because of the red.. I guess evolution has a really good answer to why that is. :la:

I love birds, if you hadn't noticed. My favorite part about them is their eyes. You capture their eyes perfectly. I really enjoy that.

Great shot! And congratulations on the Daily Deviation! I normally don't really like coots but this is an awesome photograph:clap:
Did you know though that while this looks like a loving parent coots (both chicks and parents) sometimes tend to mob the weakest chick and in extreme cases even stop feeding it and leave it to die? For me as a human being that seems a little harsh...

Thank you!

Heh, I know, I read up on coots briefly and they lay up to 9 eggs but will only rear 2-3 chicks to adulthood. It's like this in other birds species as well, a sort of defense mechanism for the survival of the species. It's very sad in a way, but at the same time it's their natural behaviour and I won't fault an animal for their natural behaviour. :)

Wow, how very noble of you:thumbsup: I know it's just natural and I've seen that sort of behaviour from storks as well but still...
